Live: The Social at The Social

25May09

The Social, 24th May

The Social recently released their five track EP ‘A Call To Arms‘, and made it available through Rough Trade, a name synonymous with breaking the best new bands. Their show at London’s The Social, demonstrates the faith that RT have in this Smiths cum Joy Division cum Echo and the Bunnymen outfit.

Swirling jangly Marr-esque guitars and Andy Rourke inspired basslines crash through each song, giving them a not-so-gothic feel to a band called, by a far bigger blog than this, ‘gothic’. These four fellas are not gothic. They are as gothic as I am a giraffe.

The set, played at a frantic pace, underlies the strength in the songs that the band currently have. Not put off by a less than generous crowd, they fought drunk stage invaders and poor front of house sound, to produce a lively and compelling group of songs which are a must-add-to the iPod affair.

The band will be playing at Camden Rocks, a proper version of the Camden Crawl, on June 6th and then Dingwall’s on June 11th.

You can hear The Social on their Myspace page here!
